Core Feature

Laboratory Workflow

Structured workflows for every stage of case processing. From BMS prosection and cut-up through to consultant authorisation and case closure, every step is tracked with full accountability.

BMS Processing Pipeline

A structured four-stage processing pipeline tracks every specimen through the laboratory. Each stage is assigned to a named BMS technician, creating clear accountability and workload visibility.

  • Prosection - Initial specimen examination and dissection. Prosector BMS recorded against the case with workload counts tracked automatically.
  • Cut-Up - Tissue sectioning into blocks for processing. Each block identified by specimen letter and block number, with the cut-up BMS assigned.
  • Embedding - Tissue embedded in paraffin blocks ready for microtomy. Embedding technician recorded for each case processed.
  • QC Checking - Quality control verification of prepared slides before release to the pathologist. Checking BMS signs off on slide quality.

Section-by-Section Authorisation

Each report section requires independent consultant authorisation before a case can be closed. This ensures thorough review and creates a clear audit trail of who authorised what, and when.

  • Independent Section Control - Each report section (Macro, Micro, Clinical, Supplementary, etc.) is authorised separately, allowing parallel work on different sections.
  • Authorisation Tracking - Every authorisation records the consultant, timestamp, and section. Full history maintained including any amendments after authorisation.
  • Case Closure Controls - Cases cannot be closed until all required report sections are authorised. Previously closed cases can be reopened for supplementary reporting.
  • Second Opinion Workflow - Request a second opinion from another consultant on any case. Track second opinion requests and responses within the case record.

Histopathology & Post-Mortem Pathways

CorePathology provides distinct workflows for histopathology and post-mortem cases, each with tailored report sections, navigation, and data capture fields appropriate to the case type.

  • Histopathology Workflow - Specimen Details, Clinical Details, Macroscopic, Microscopic, and Supplementary sections. Standard biopsy and surgical pathology pathway.
  • Post-Mortem Workflow - Cause of Death, Internal Examination, Tissue Retained, Toxicology, and Histology sections. Coroner reference and mortuary tracking included.
  • Urgent Case Flagging - Mark cases as urgent to prioritise them through the laboratory workflow. Urgent status is visible at every stage of processing.
  • Rich Text Reporting - Full rich text editor for all report sections. Quick text templates for rapid entry of standard findings and diagnoses.

Authorise & Close

Consultant authorises each report section independently. Case closed and PDF report generated for distribution.

Scanner Integration

CorePathology integrates with whole slide imaging scanners from any vendor. Scanned slide images are linked directly to cases, with configurable naming conventions and built-in validation to ensure completeness before cases leave the laboratory.

  • Vendor-Agnostic - Configure multiple scanner locations per client, each with its own name, code, and network address. Works with any scanner that produces standard image formats.
  • Three Naming Modes - Manual entry, Standard auto-generated names based on lab number and block/slide position, or Rescan mode with intelligent sequential numbering for re-scanned slides.
  • Slide Validation at Check-In - Cases cannot leave the laboratory until the number of uploaded slides matches the required count. Prevents incomplete cases reaching consultants.
  • Direct Case Linking - Each scanned image is linked to a specific case via lab number, with full audit trail of when images were added and by whom.
